With the expansion of asset types within Consumr.ai to include insights, we needed to standardize the interface. Our initial approach was to add a preview feature to file assets for a quick content overview. However, this design didn't align with the existing report assets. We tried to incorporate a review mode into report assets, but it wasn't effective. Ultimately, we aligned the report asset interface with the file asset design.
For our users, we aimed to maintain an insights-focused experience, even when they navigated away from the Omnibox. We experimented with color coding to differentiate insight mode from action mode. However, the color differentiation alone wasn't sufficient for clear communication.
Our solution is the introduction of a pop-up modal for asset interaction. Now, executing a report, opening a file, or revisiting an existing report launches in a modal. Closing the modal redirects the user back to the Omnibox.
Exceptions to the modal experience occur when a report or file is opened in a new browser tab, displaying full-page content, or when a report is shared with an external third-party user; in these cases, the modal does not appear.
The modal functionality extends to file assets and conversations. Although conversations are not classified as assets, they are included because research assets are frequently generated through the conversation panel.
